About
Picture
At  Shades of Silver Design my passion is to create inspiring beautiful pieces of sterling silver jewellery. Whether you're looking for a special gift for someone, or a treat for yourself I hope that you will find something you love!

My love for sterling silver began at college where I first encountered the art of precious metalwork. I was captivated by the traditional methods involved and eager to develop my skills. I now design and make individual sterling silver jewellery from my Morecambe Bay home town on the North Lancashire coast with it's stunning backdrop of the beautiful English Lake District.

I incorporate a range of techniques in my collections including embossing, heat soldering, sterling silver wire-work, saw-piercing, and texture. I'm always absorbed in my silver work, exploring new processes and designs to add to my gallery. I hope my jewellery inspires you with the perfect gift solution for those hard to buy for people!

Inspiration
I draw inspiration from the everyday world in particular the abundance of shapes and weathered textures found within the surrounding countryside and coastline.
Our family business
Robinson's Florists. (established over 70 years!) has stunning floral displays that also provide a bounty of wonderful forms for me to translate into silver.

My aim is to create something timeless and wearable that captures the full brilliance and reflections of the silver. Serendipity often helps to evolve a design in such a way that it becomes a rare and individual piece of jewellery.
Perfect if you are looking for something with unique appeal rather than mass produced.

Since childhood I have been surrounded by garden flowers and plants, the intricate structure of which is often interpreted within my sterling silver designs.

The Handmade Process

All my pieces are individually made using traditional tools. I enjoy creating collection pieces as well as one of a kind.

Once the  hard silver is annealed it becomes soft and malleable allowing it to be worked in many ways. Traditional methods  include forging, saw-piercing, embossing, soldering and wire-work. I often apply texture to add depth and strength along with unique surface effects that bring subtle differences to every piece.

I construct my designs based on initial drawings and I work with non precious material before progressing to the sterling silver. Great focus is invested into the final stages to produce the highest standard for every piece.

 Shades of Silver Design
When sterling silver is heated with a flame the colour changes. The beautiful shades can range from petrol blue to cherry red, salmon pink to gunmetal as the silver temperature increases and drops. The silver becomes oxidised. To remove the oxidisation the cooled silver is then placed in a warm acid 'pickle' solution which causes a reaction that transforms the silver to white. The precious metal is then polished to restore the beautiful silvery shine.

Alternatively an interesting patina effect can be created when 'liver of sulphur' is introduced. The precious silver reacts to produce a rainbow of different shades of colour including green, purple, gold.

My silver jewellery stall was part of the Storey's Handmade and Vintage Xmas Fair Lancaster.

The Storey building is a beautiful setting for the event being one of the most historic Victorian buildings in the city of Lancaster.

An early start was needed to prepare and set up. It was a long and busy day but well worth it. The Fair featured an amazing array of quality hand crafted work by talented artists.
